Arimidex Anastrozole

Bottle of 30 tablets. 1mg of Anastrozole per tab. Anastrodex is a non steroidal anti-aromatase compound used to lower estrogens in the body.



What does Anastrozole do?

Anastrodex is a hormonal therapy used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women with estrogen sensitive breast cancer. In postmenopausal women the main source of estrogen is via conversion of androgens (aromatization) by the aromatase enzyme in the fatty tissues of the body. Anastrozole is a drug that blocks the aromatization process, and so reduces the amount of estrogen in the body. As less estrogen can reach the cancer cells, they grow more slowly or stop growing altogether. In addition, anastrozole can be used to treat infertility caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

How does Anastrozole work?

Anastrozole reversibly inhibits the enzyme responsible for conversion of testosterone to estrogen. It works by binding to the enzyme and making it unable to carry out its usual functions.

Many breast cancers are stimulated to grow by the estrogen and progesterone. Such cancers can be treated with drugs that block the effects of these hormones. In postmenopausal women, estrogen is mainly produced through conversion of androgens (sex hormones produced by the adrenal glands) to estrogens. This process is called aromatisation and takes place mainly in the fatty tissues, muscles and the skin, and requires aromatase enzyme. Anastrozole blocks the process of aromatisation this way lowering the amount of estrogen in the body. In advanced breast cancer the cancerous cells may grow more slowly or stop growing completely.

Safety Information and Side Effects

Anastrozole side effects are usually mild if the dosing is adjusted appropriately by physician. The most common side effects include headaches, hot flushes and sweats, nausea, mild rash, joint stiffness or pain, joint swelling (arthritis), loss of bone density, mood swings, fatigue, and reduced libido. Less common side effects include bone pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, hair thinning, and loss of appetite, increased blood cholesterol, diarrhea, vaginal dryness and vaginal bleeding.
