What does Methylhexanamine do?
Methylhexanamine is an indirect sympathomimetic compound that causes vasoconstriction with direct effects on the heart, lungs, and reproductive organs; it also causes bronchodilation, inhibits peristalsis in the intestines, and has diuretic effects. Methylhexanamine also acts as a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant.
Physiology studies of the compound demonstrated its physiological effects mimicking the action of epinephrine with both peripheral sympathetic neuron and central nervous system effects. These include increases in blood pressure due to the constriction of peripheral blood vessels, increased heart rate due to cardiac stimulation and increased blood sugar levels.
How does Methylhexanamine work?
The scientific name of DMAA is 1,3-dimethylamylamine or methylhexanamine. It is a sympathomimetic aliphatic amine vasoconstrictor.
The exact mechanism of action of dimethylamylamine is not fully known yet, but structurally, it is very similar to tuamine – a competitive noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor which also inhibits noradrenaline transporter. Dimethylamylamine is thought to have stimulant effects similar to that of ephedrine, hence why this compound is commonly used as an alternative to ephedrine. Ephedrine however, stimulates release of noradrenaline with agonistic action on the adrenoreceptors. Therefore DMAA is likely to be an indirect sympathomimetic, exhibiting its effects on the release/reuptake of noradrenaline. No studies have been published that examine DMAA or tuamine as direct sympathomimetics with direct action on the adrenoreceptors.
